General Care |
When weather permits carry on preparing your ground for spring. |
Flower beds |
Now is the time to prune your dogwoods. Cut them back almost to ground level to encourage new colourful shoots for next winter. Prune your clematis. Deadhead any plants that are flowering. Roses may be planted if the soil is not too wet. Finish deadheading plants.
Lawn |
Continue to aerate and scarify lawns. Break up worm casts and spread across the lawn. Check for moss. If it is really bad you probably have a drainage problem. |
Pond |
Remove debris as it occurs to stop it rotting and sinking to the bottom. |
Greenhouse |
Pot on any over wintered plants such as pelargoniums and fuchsias. Sow gloxinias and coleus. Prune any climbers in the greenhouse and remove any dead fronds from ferns etc. In a heated area, sow bedding plants such as petunias, busy lizzies and geraniums.
Vegetables |
Sow early carrots, parsnips, broad beans, shallots and peas. Prune outdoor grape vines. Sow leeks, summer cabbage and onions in warm propagators under cover.
Indoors |
Indoor plants in February do not look their best. You may have to throw out plants that may not recover their looks.
