December |
General Care |
Not a good month for gardeners. Christmas and other festivities often get in the way. When possible you should continue to clear the garden up ready for the winter. Remember it is the east winds that bring really cold spells, westerlies normally bring wind and rain. Keep fragile shrubs snow free.

Flower beds |
Finish planting roses for the winter. |
Lawn |
Not much to do to a lawn in December. Plan for next spring, oil equipment ready for winter storage. Aerate as required. Keep clear of wind blown leaves and compost the leaves.
Pond |
Try to ensure that some water remains unfrozen. If you have a lot of dead leaves on the bottom these will rot and form toxic gasses which will be unable to escape if the pond is completely frozen over.
Greenhouse |
Growth is slow this time of year. Ventilate on warmer days but always remember to close up at the end of the day. Slugs can be problem so watch out for this.
Vegetables |
Harvest parsnips and pick sprouts from the bottom of the plant up. December is a good time to dig over vacant areas and think about crop rotation for the coming year. |
Indoors |
Make sure plants have plenty of light, it is easy to overlook this during the short days of winter. Keep the plants a little on the dry side but do not under water. Cyclamen need a little more humidity.
